AROUND THE WORLD

STREET ART IN YEOSU

This winter break, I got the privilege to travel to Goso-dong in Yeosu, Chellanam-do after visiting it in the year of 2012 for World EXPO. Yeosu provided lots of great places to go to such as the Yeosu Maritime cable car, Odong-do, Hyangiram, Aquariums, Yi Sun Shin Square, Yeosu HeungGukSa Temple and so much more. Yi Sun Shin Square was close to one of the famous burger shops in that area called Yi Sun Shin burger. After eating lunch there, I decided to check out the famous Yi Sun Shin Square and take the tour bus which eventually led me to the Goso-dong art street.

Goso-dong art street was very easy to navigate as there was a map at the starting point and the paths were numbered. Although I haven't been able to go through every path, I quickly noticed that Goso-dong art street was filled with unique street art relating to Yeosu. The artworks helped to brighten the mood of the residential areas as they were painted on the walls of houses. Some examples of street art in Goso-dong street was the Turtle ship and the path filled with paintings of fish.

STREET ART IN HONGDAE

Hongdae is a very vibrant and youthful area. In this area around Hongik University, you may find people busking, dancing or performing. Street art and graffiti can be found all over Hongdae and helps to add color to the area. The video showcases some graffiti at one of the subways exits as well as beautiful street art next to trendy shops and restaurants.

STREET ART IN MULLAE

Mullae is a very industrial area on the south of Han river. You will be able to hear drills and other machinery as you walk in Mullae. In fact, it may be the last place you would associate with art. However, the little pieces of artwork that you find unexpectedly is really what makes this area interesting. Mullae is definitely worth walking around as it may possibly lead to cute cafés.  The type of artwork you may find here are many different versions of cats, complex drawings of animals or colorful figures dancing on the panels of garage doors.

STREET ART IN HYEHWA/ IHWA

Just past the vibrant streets of Ihwa university, Naksan park has a collection of beautiful murals. As 60 artists were invited to transform this sleepy village, each little piece is colorful and cute. Despite the steep slope, Naksan Park attracts many visitors who want to take pictures with the murals or just spend a nice afternoon. Out of all the four places, Ihwa has the most artworks and rewards you with a panoramic view of Seoul once you reach the top. Just remember to keep the volume down as it is a residential area.

In Apgujeong lies one of the most popular and well-known places to find street art. Near the Han river park, there is a tunnel dedicated to street art. In here, street artists can legally show creativity but must follow some rules that can be seen at the entrance of the tunnel. This place has been featured in many Kpop music videos and is a good place to stop by after a good walk or bike along Han river.
